How to read a soroban
Each rod is a place value. The rightmost rod is the ones, the next is tens, then hundreds. To show 7 on the ones rod, bring the 5-bead down and push two 1-beads up: 5 + 2 = 7. To show 23, put 2 on the tens rod and 3 on the ones rod.
