Numbers

Multiply and divide integers

Same signs → positive answer. Different signs → negative answer.

Builds on: Add and subtract integers

Try it:

  1. 11 × (−12) = ? → −132
  2. 16 ÷ 2 = ? → 8

Exponents and powers

aⁿ means a multiplied by itself n times: 2⁵ = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32.

Builds on: 2-digit × 2-digit

Try it:

  1. What is 2⁶? → 64
  2. What is 2⁷? → 128

Two-step equations

Undo in reverse order: first remove the added/subtracted number, then divide.

Builds on: Solve simple equations

Try it:

  1. Solve: 7x + 17 = 73 → 8
  2. Solve: 3x + 20 = 14 → −2

Simplify algebraic expressions

Only like terms (same letter) can be added: 3x + 5x − 2x = 6x.

Builds on: Evaluate algebraic expressions

Try it:

  1. Simplify: 5m + 7m − 8m → 4m
  2. Simplify: 3a + 3a − 1a → 5a

Fractions & decimals

Add rational numbers

Make the denominators equal, add the numerators (keeping their signs), then simplify.

Builds on: Add unlike fractions, Add and subtract integers

Try it:

  1. 4/6 + 2/6 = ? (simplest form) → 1
  2. (−7/6) + (−5/8) = ? (simplest form) → −43/24

Divide decimals

Make the divisor a whole number by multiplying both numbers by 10 (or 100), then divide.

Builds on: Multiply decimals by whole numbers

Try it:

  1. 5.4 ÷ 0.3 = ? → 18
  2. 13.8 ÷ 0.6 = ? → 23

Percentage increase and decrease

Percentage change = change ÷ original × 100.

Builds on: Percent, fraction and decimal

Try it:

  1. A price falls from ₹400 to ₹320. What is the percentage decrease? → 20%
  2. A price falls from ₹50 to ₹25. What is the percentage decrease? → 50%

Proportion

In a proportion a : b = c : d, the cross products are equal: a × d = b × c.

Builds on: Ratios in simplest form

Try it:

  1. 2 : 4 = 12 : ? → 24
  2. 5 : 6 = 20 : ? → 24

Word problems

Simple interest

Simple interest = Principal × Rate × Time ÷ 100.

Builds on: Percentages

Try it:

  1. What is the simple interest on ₹1,000 at 6% per year for 3 years? → 180
  2. What is the simple interest on ₹5,000 at 5% per year for 5 years? → 1,250

Profit and loss per cent

Profit % = profit ÷ cost price × 100 (always divide by the COST price).

Builds on: Profit and loss, Percent, fraction and decimal

Try it:

  1. Cost price ₹100, selling price ₹105. Find the profit or loss per cent. → profit 5%
  2. Cost price ₹100, selling price ₹125. Find the profit or loss per cent. → profit 25%

Shapes & patterns

Exterior angle of a triangle

An exterior angle equals the sum of the two interior opposite angles.

Builds on: Angles in a triangle

Try it:

  1. The two interior opposite angles of a triangle are 48° and 32°. What is the exterior angle? → 80
  2. The two interior opposite angles of a triangle are 25° and 75°. What is the exterior angle? → 100

Pythagoras theorem

In a right-angled triangle, hypotenuse² = base² + height².

Builds on: Exponents and powers

Try it:

  1. A right-angled triangle has legs 6 cm and 8 cm. How long is the hypotenuse? → 10
  2. A right-angled triangle has legs 9 cm and 12 cm. How long is the hypotenuse? → 15

Measurement

Circumference and area of a circle

Circumference = 2πr; area = πr². Use π = 22/7 when the radius is a multiple of 7.

Builds on: Area and perimeter of squares

Try it:

  1. A circle has radius 35 cm. Find its circumference (cm). (π = 22/7) → 220
  2. A circle has radius 21 cm. Find its circumference (cm). (π = 22/7) → 132

Data handling

Simple probability

Probability = number of favourable outcomes ÷ total outcomes.

Builds on: Fraction of a quantity

Try it:

  1. A bag has 5 red, 4 blue and 5 green balls. One is picked at random. What is the probability it is red? → 5/14
  2. A bag has 8 red, 4 blue and 4 green balls. One is picked at random. What is the probability it is red? → 1/2

Median and mode

Median: arrange in order and take the middle value. Mode: the value that appears most often.

Builds on: Mean and range

Try it:

  1. Find the mode of 26, 16, 26, 26, 19. → 26
  2. Find the median of 15, 1, 34, 16, 39. → 16
