๐งฎ Abacus or Vedic Maths: Which Is Better for My Child?
Parents often ask which one to choose. The honest answer: they build different skills, they suit different ages, and the best results come from using both in the right order.
What the abacus builds
The soroban abacus turns numbers into beads a child can touch and see. With practice, children picture the beads in their mind (called Anzan) and add long lists of numbers quickly. The main benefits are number sense, place value, concentration and visual memory.
What Vedic maths builds
Vedic maths is a collection of shortcuts for multiplying, dividing, squaring and checking answers. It rewards children who already know their tables and can spot patterns. Its main benefit is speed with larger numbers, which helps a lot in competitive exams later.
Side by side
| Abacus | Vedic maths | |
|---|---|---|
| Best starting age | 5โ8 | 9โ10 onwards |
| Needs tables first? | No | Yes |
| Strongest for | Addition, subtraction, focus | Multiplication, squares, checking |
| Learning style | Visual and hands-on | Pattern-spotting |
| Exam use later | Indirect (number sense) | Direct (speed shortcuts) |
Our recommendation
- Ages 5โ8: start with the abacus. It builds the number sense everything else rests on.
- Ages 8โ10: master the times tables, then add the first Vedic tricks (ร11, squares ending in 5, numbers near 100).
- Ages 10+: keep both, and learn to choose: some numbers suit a Vedic trick, others suit the column method.
One caution
Neither replaces school maths. Shortcuts without understanding break as soon as a question is worded differently. Make sure your child can explain why a trick works, not just follow the steps.
BeadBop teaches both, alongside school maths: the abacus with 103 step-by-step lessons, and Vedic maths with every trick explained and practised. Start free.
Quick answers
Can my child learn abacus and Vedic maths together?
Yes, but in order. Abacus suits ages 5โ8 and builds number sense; Vedic maths works best once tables are known, around age 9โ10. After that, using both is ideal.
Is abacus useful after primary school?
Yes, indirectly. The visualisation and concentration it builds help with all mental maths, even when children stop using the bead technique itself.
Does Vedic maths help in exams?
For competitive exams with time pressure, such as Olympiads and later aptitude tests, its shortcuts save real time. In school exams, written working still matters, so children should know the standard method too.
