๐Ÿ• Fractions for Kids: A Simple Visual Guide

Fractions confuse many children because the bigger number at the bottom makes a smaller piece. A few pictures and the right words fix most of that.

What is a fraction?

A fraction describes part of a whole. In ยพ, the bottom number (the denominator) says how many equal parts the whole is cut into: 4. The top number (the numerator) says how many of those parts we take: 3. Three slices of a pizza cut into four equal slices.

Why โ…› is smaller than ยผ

Share one chocolate bar between 4 friends, then between 8 friends. With more people, each piece is smaller โ€” so โ…› < ยผ. The bigger the denominator, the smaller each part.

Equivalent fractions

ยฝ, 2โ„4, 3โ„6 and 4โ„8 all describe the same amount. You get an equivalent fraction by multiplying or dividing the top and bottom by the same number: ยฝ = (1 ร— 3)/(2 ร— 3) = 3โ„6. Dividing both by their common factor simplifies: 6โ„8 = 3โ„4.

Adding and subtracting

With the same denominator, add the tops and keep the bottom: 2โ„7 + 3โ„7 = 5โ„7. With different denominators, first rewrite both with a common denominator (the LCM works best):

โ…“ + ยผ = 4โ„12 + 3โ„12 = 7โ„12.

A very common mistake is adding the bottoms too: โ…“ + ยผ is not 2โ„7. Ask: "Can two pieces add up to less than half?" โ€” that sense-check catches it.

Mixed numbers

2ยฝ means 2 wholes and a half. To turn it into an improper fraction: 2 ร— 2 + 1 = 5, so 2ยฝ = 5โ„2.

Fraction of a number

ยพ of 20: divide by the bottom, multiply by the top. 20 รท 4 = 5, 5 ร— 3 = 15.

Quick answers

How do you explain fractions to a child?

Use a pizza or a chocolate bar: the bottom number is how many equal pieces the whole is cut into, the top number is how many pieces you take.

How do you add fractions with different denominators?

Rewrite both fractions with a common denominator (usually the LCM), then add the numerators: 1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12.

What are equivalent fractions?

Fractions that show the same amount, such as 1/2, 2/4 and 3/6. Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number to make one.
