๐Ÿ… How to Prepare for the Maths Olympiad (IMO)

BeadBop Maths Blog ยท Updated 2026-11-04

The International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) run by the Science Olympiad Foundation is taken by lakhs of Indian students every year. It rewards reasoning more than speed-reading the textbook โ€” which means good preparation looks a little different from normal exam revision.

Understand the paper

The Level 1 paper has four sections:

There is no negative marking, so never leave a question blank. Classes 1โ€“4 typically have 35 questions (40 marks) and Classes 5โ€“10 have 50 questions (60 marks), in 60 minutes. Always check the latest pattern on the official SOF website before your exam.

A 6-week plan

WeekWhat to do
1Take one full mock test cold. Note your score by section โ€” this is your baseline.
2โ€“3Work topic by topic on your weakest section. 20โ€“30 minutes a day, 10 questions per topic, read every solution.
4Logical Reasoning drills: series, odd-one-out, mirror images, counting figures. These are quick marks once the patterns click.
5Achievers' questions and mixed section tests under time.
6Two full mocks, timed. Review mistakes, not just scores.

Practice strategies that make the biggest difference

  1. Read the question twice. Olympiad questions often hide the key word: "NOT", "except", "smallest".
  2. Work backwards from the options when algebra is hard โ€” plug each option in.
  3. Keep an error notebook. Write the mistake and the right method. Re-do those questions a week later.
  4. Time-box. About a minute per question; skip and return.
  5. Learn the 40% rule. Level 1 papers also include questions from the previous class, so revise last year's topics too.

Is there negative marking in the Maths Olympiad?

No. The SOF IMO Level 1 has no negative marking, so you should attempt every question.

How should a Class 3 child prepare for the Maths Olympiad?

Take a mock test to find weak sections, then practise 10 questions a day topic by topic, with extra time on logical reasoning. Finish with two timed full mocks in the last week.
