📚 CBSE vs ICSE vs IB Maths: What Changes from Class 8 to 12

BeadBop Maths Blog · Updated 2026-11-04

All three boards teach the same core maths, but they differ in which extra topics they include, how applied the questions are, and how students are assessed. Here is an overview for Classes 8 to 12.

CBSE (NCERT)

CBSE follows the NCERT textbooks. Classes 8–10 cover number systems, algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, statistics and probability. Classes 11–12 build up to calculus, vectors, 3D geometry, matrices and probability, which also forms the base for JEE preparation. Board exams focus on clear written working.

ICSE and ISC (CISCE)

ICSE (Classes 9–10) covers similar core topics but adds practical, commercial maths: GST, banking (recurring deposits), shares and dividends, plus matrices, reflection and loci. ISC (Classes 11–12) is organised into sections: a core of algebra and calculus, with options that include vectors and 3D (Section B) or applied topics such as linear programming and regression (Section C).

IB (MYP and Diploma)

The IB Middle Years Programme (roughly Classes 6–10) is assessed through criteria such as investigating patterns and communicating mathematically, not only through tests. In the Diploma Programme (Classes 11–12), students choose Analysis & Approaches (more algebra and calculus) or Applications & Interpretation (more statistics and modelling), at Standard or Higher Level. Every DP student writes a maths exploration, the internal assessment.

Switching boards?

The core skills carry across. When switching, focus on the board-specific topics, such as shares and GST when moving to ICSE, and the exploration and modelling style when moving to IB.

Syllabi are revised from time to time, so always check the current year’s official syllabus from CBSE, CISCE or the IB.

The Syllabus Map in the BeadBop app lists the units for each board and class and links each one to practice questions.

Quick answers

Is ICSE maths harder than CBSE maths?

ICSE covers a few extra applied topics, such as banking, shares and GST, and often goes into more detail, so many students find it heavier. The core topics are similar.

What is the difference between IB Maths AA and AI?

Analysis & Approaches focuses more on algebra, functions and calculus; Applications & Interpretation focuses more on statistics, modelling and technology. Both come at Standard and Higher Level.

Which board is best for JEE preparation?

CBSE’s Class 11–12 syllabus overlaps most directly with JEE, but students from any board can prepare well by covering the JEE topics separately.
